food

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

over the past couple of years, i've been trying to do more research about food and food consumption. trying to educate myself about where my food was coming from and how it was being utilized in my body as fuel. i'll quietly disregard my brief belief that wasabi almonds were a 'whole food'. i've progressed, people.

present day - b and i are on a simplicity kick. we cancelled cable, hooked up his granddad's old transistor radio, and started watching more documentaries. one of those documentaries was food, inc. - and at the end of it all, we just decided it was time to do a good, ol' fashioned reset.

so we've embarked on a 30 day experiment of sorts. we're excluding many common allergens from our diet: no dairy, no sugar (other than what naturally occurs in fruit), no gluten, no grain, no starches, no legumes. which essentially leaves vegetables and fruit (local, in season only), pasteurized beef and poultry (including eggs), wild, sustainably caught fish, and nuts. we're hoping we can acclimate our systems, adjust our expectations for true flavor, and just get a little bit healthier.

we're on day 4.

part of me wants to whine that i can't have wine (or cheese!) but the truth is, it isn't so bad. it isn't so bad at all. what it's really started to teach me is that i get so much more satisfaction out of making intentional decisions about what to put in my body (and b's, too). i really can't explain how nice it is to cook b food that i know will nourish him and keep him healthy. and i think we're both looking forward to seeing where it leads.

i'm hoping this doesn't come off as too hippie-woo-woo (did i mention we want a vw bus?), but we're just trying to get back to basics. for us, this is what's working.

wish us luck, and recipes would be welcome. also welcome: ideas for day 31!
